What is a Gay Bear?
Gay bear is a term used to describe a subculture within the gay community. Gay bear culture is characterised by masculinity, body hair, and physical strength. The term “bear” was first coined by Tom of Finland in a 1976 drawing, and has since been used to describe a subculture of gay men who identify with the traits and characteristics associated with bears. The gay bear community is inclusive and welcoming, and includes people of all races, ages, and body types.
Being a “Gay Bear” is not exclusive to just Gay Men but is the historical terms used. Bisexual, Heterosexual, Lesbian and Transgender to name but a few can also be a Bear or an admirer.
Slang terms:
Some slang terms relating to the bear community include the following:
- Big Boy – An Afrocentric term for bears, particularly those of African or African American heritage. Similar to chubs, big boy culture may be considered distinct, if related to, bear culture.
- Chub – A heavy-set man who might be described as overweight or obese. These men are also a distinct subculture within the gay community, and may or may not identify with the bear movement per se.
- Cub – a younger (or younger-looking) version of a bear, sometimes but not always, with a smaller frame.
- Otter – Considered a subspecies of “bear” by some, an otter is a hairy slim or small-framed man.
- Panda (or Panda bear) – A bear of Asian descent.
- Polar bear – An older bear whose facial and body hair is predominantly or entirely white or grey.
- Trans bear – A transgender person, typically a trans man or otherwise of transmasculine experience, who is hairy and heavy-set.
- Ursula – A lesbian bear.
- Wolf – A gay man with body and facial hair, but also a very lean, muscular, athletic build.
Bear Events:
Commercial establishments catering to the LGBTQ community such as Bars, Nightclubs and Gay saunas have historically hosted events specifically for the Bear Community and their admirers. The primary venues offering such events are mainly Gay saunas.
Established Gay Bear Groups may also offer meet-ups in non commercial locations.
